I have a favorite sound.
I also love the many sounds my adorable daughters make. A belly laugh, a new word or phrase, or a spontaneous “I love you, Mommy” are all amazing, cherished sounds.
The one that tops them all is Tom’s laugh. Specifically, when he laughs so hard his eyes crinkle up, his shoulders shake, and tears start to roll down his cheeks which he wipes away with the heels of his very large hands.
You know that feeling when you first fall in love – when something you do or say makes the object of your affection smile or laugh and it feels as if you might not ever accomplish anything as great as that? That the light they shine on you is so much more powerful than the sunlight coming through the window. That’s how I feel every time Tom laughs like that. And if I’m the reason he’s laughing? It’s pure gold. It’s magic.
Five years ago we got engaged. Six years ago we were madly in love, fantasizing about marriage and children, heartbroken over circumstances that, at the time, seemed insurmountable. Fourteen years ago…well. You’ve probably heard the story. Sometimes when we see how everything has turned out – it’s almost too much happiness to bear.
All I want to say, Tom, is that I adore you. You’re the one. It’s you. It’s always been you.
